A questioner may ask about the actual punishment

A questioner (Sa'ala) may ask (Saa'ilu) about (Bi) the actual (Waaqie) punishment (Äzaabin)

to the disbelievers; it has no repellent

to the disbelievers (Lil' Kaafiriina); it has (Lahu) no (Lai'sa) repellent (Daafiu)

against GOD, Possessor of the ladders*.

against GOD (Minallahi), Possessor (Zii) of the ladders (El'Ma'äärij)*.

The Angels and the Spirit will ascend to HIM in a period whose extent is fifty thousand years.

The Angels (El'Malaa’ikatu) and (Wa) the Spirit (97:4) (Er'Ruuhu) will ascend (Ta'ruju) to HIM (ilai'hi) in (Fii) a period (Yaw'min) whose extent (Miq'daaru-hu) is (Kaana) fifty (Kham'siina) thousand (Al'fa) years (Sana’).

Therefore be patient with a beautiful patience.

Therefore (Fa) be patient (Es'bir') with a beautiful (Jamiilaa) patience (Sob'ran).

Indeed, they see it faraway,

Indeed, they (Innahum) see it (Yaraw'na-hu) faraway (Baeedaa),

but We see it near.

but (Wa) We see it (Naraa-hu) near (Qariibaa).

The day the sky will be like molten brass,

The day (Yaw'ma) the sky (Es'Samaau) will be (Takuunu) like (Ka) molten brass (El'Muh'l),

and the mountains will be like wool,

and (Wa) the mountains (El'Jibaalu) will be (Takuunu) like (Ka) wool (El'Eh'n),

And no close friend will ask of a close friend.

And (Wa) no (Laa) close friend (Hamiimun) will ask of (Yas'alu) a close friend (Hamiimaa).

They will be made to see each other. The criminal will wish he could ransom with his children from the punishment on that day

They will be made to see each other (Yubassoruuna-hum’). The criminal (El'Muj'rimu) will wish (Yawaddu Law') he could ransom (Taf'tadii) with (Bi) his children (Banii-hi) from (Min') the punishment (Äzaabi) on that day (Yaw'maizi)

with his mate and his brother,

with (Wa) his mate (f) (Soahibati-hi) and his brother (Akhii-hi),

with his family who sought him shelter,

with (Wa) his family (Fasiilati-hi) who (Ellatii) sought him shelter (Tu'wii-hi),

with those on earth all together and then he could be saved.

with (Wa) those (Man) on earth (Fiil' Ar'di) all together (Jamiiän) and then (Thumma) he could be saved (Yunjii-hi).

Nay! Indeed, it is a blazing fire,

Nay (Kallaa)! Indeed, it (Innaha) is a blazing fire (Lazoa),

leaning to roast.

leaning (Nazzaa'ätan) to roast (Lis’ Shawaa).

It invites one who turned back and turned way

It invites (Tad'u') one who (Man') turned back (Ad'bara) and (Wa) turned way (Tawalla)

and gathered and packed.

and (Wa) gathered (Jamaä) and (Fa) packed (Aw'ää).

Indeed, the human being is created anxious;

Indeed (Inna), the human being (El' Insaana) is created (Khuliqa) anxious (Haluuää);

when evil touches him, restless,

when (Izaa) evil (Es'Sharru) touches him (Massa-hu), restless (Jazuuää),
